Where am I?

In The Institute of Leadership & Management you can ask and answer questions and share your experience with others!

Managing Oneself - Peter F. Drucker

A great short read that is to the point and infinitely helpful. It's always in my laptop bag and great to reference when you have a quiet 5 minutes.

I like The New Leaders by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee, as the model links leadership styles and impact to emotional intelligence competencies.

Leadership is Language - David L Marquet - Penguin Business, 2020.   It's inspirational and goal defining!

I enjoyed reading "Leaders: Myth and Reality", by General Stanley McChrystal, former US Army General. A good, wide-ranging read full of fascinating anecdotes and personal experiences that looks at the development of 'leadership', the mythology of leadership, questions what is meant by leadership, and concludes with thoughts on redefining leadership.

Leadership: Theory and Practice by Peter G. Northouse.

My go-to book on leadership.

I particularly like that:

  • It gives an academically robust account of the major theories and models of leadership with a focus on how theory can inform practice.
  • Whilst comprehensive, the writing style is not overly ‘technical’, there are lots of helpful diagrams and tables.
  • It enables me to compare and contrast the different theories easily.
  • Plenty of case studies and questionnaires.
  • It is regularly updated. for example, the latest (9th) edition includes new real-world cases that profile leaders from across the globe, issues such as leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.

The book is an investment - I have the Kindle Edition to cut down on costs and paper
