With Shell having recorded its highest-ever quarterly profits as it capitalised on the volatility in global energy markets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, how would you respond to this public backlash as a leader?
The first thing I would do is address the reports that Shell are hiding Russian Oil imports by mixing it with 50.1% other oil.... Being perceived as duplicitous cannot be good for the image.
Then I would lead the way in the UK and Europe in promoting the benefits of a 'windfall tax' and a willingness to pay it.
Finally I'd lower prices ...... just as Asda stated they'd absorb the Chancellor's tax duty rise on fuel in the latest budget so could Shell reduce the price and accept that they won't make quite as large a profit the next quarter.
That would be a win for the consumer, leading to a potential increase in business and therefore less of a hit to profits, and less of a hit to the dividends of their shareholders which imposed taxes and price drops might incur.
I do admit that if i were to be the CEO of Shell I may not be in my job for very much longer if I did announce all these courses of action, but I'm sure my personal pay-off would see me through :)
