Leadership: Theory and Practice by Peter G. Northouse.

My go-to book on leadership.

I particularly like that:

  • It gives an academically robust account of the major theories and models of leadership with a focus on how theory can inform practice.
  • Whilst comprehensive, the writing style is not overly ‘technical’, there are lots of helpful diagrams and tables.
  • It enables me to compare and contrast the different theories easily.
  • Plenty of case studies and questionnaires.

Managing Oneself - Peter F. Drucker 

A great short read that is to the point and infinitely helpful. It's always in my laptop bag and great to reference when you have a quiet 5 minutes.

I enjoyed reading "Leaders: Myth and Reality", by General Stanley McChrystal, former US Army General. A good, wide-ranging read full of fascinating anecdotes and personal experiences that looks at the development of 'leadership', the mythology of leadership, questions what is meant by leadership, and concludes with thoughts on redefining leadership.
